Nearly half of U.S. citizens are affected by some form of periodontitis. Fortunately, this condition can be easily prevented. One thing essential to ward off common mouth infections is practicing proper dental hygiene. Taking good care of your teeth and gums will help keep dental plaque and tartar from persisting in your mouth. This, in return, will reduce your risk of cavities that result in tooth decay. It will also prevent periodontitis and other dental problems.

If you’re having trouble taking care of your teeth and oral tissues, continue reading to discover some amazing oral care tips.

1. Use the right toothbrush
Proper dental hygiene should start with getting an appropriate toothbrush that’s gentle on your enamel and gums. Make sure the head of your brush is of the right size. It shouldn’t be too large and create difficulty brushing your molars, since bacteria are more prone to develop in hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. Besides, its bristles need to be small enough to access the deep crevices in your teeth. They also need to be soft to allow you to apply pressure without damaging your enamel and gum line. This is quite crucial, as you should apply proper pressure to eliminate plaque. When shopping, look for a toothbrush with the ADA seal of acceptance.

2. Brush correctly and properly
Correct brushing technique is essential to remove all food residue from the surface of your teeth. Consider using a technique recommended by the American Dental Association the next time you brush.

Start by positioning your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gum line. Then begin gently and cautiously brushing the outer surface of your teeth. Use the same technique while cleaning the chewing surface of your teeth.

To brush the inner surface of your teeth, keep your toothbrush in a vertical position and carefully move it up and down. Don’t forget to rinse your mouth and clean your toothbrush after the procedure. Do this at least two times a day.

3. See your dentist biannually
Don’t neglect your twice-yearly dental checkups and cleanings to make sure your teeth stay healthy. Regular professional cleanings will help prevent potential tooth discoloration, cavities, and bad breath. Dental checkups and screenings are necessary to detect any issues early and prevent them from developing into serious dental problems. Also, consider visiting a leading dentist whenever you suspect you may be having problems with your teeth and gum line, even if it’s not time for your scheduled visit yet. Tooth loss, blood pouring from your gums, and extreme sensitivity are all worth visiting your dentist.

4. Quit using tobacco products
Tobacco is one of the main causes of poor dental health, damaging the teeth in a variety of ways. It discolors your teeth, dental bridges, dentures, and other dental work. It also reduces the amount of saliva in your mouth, which is necessary for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

Tobacco increases your risk of developing plaque accumulation and experiencing more serious issues like gum disease and mouth cancer. Tobacco also has an effect on the immune system and the healing process.

5. Limit your sugar consumption
In your mouth, there are several different forms of bacteria, some of which are beneficial and others that are harmful. Some of these dangerous bacteria produce dissolving acids when digesting sugar. These acids then cause damage to your teeth by extracting minerals from their protective layer.

Over time, repetitive attacks on the outer layer of the enamel will weaken and damage it. Sugar causes cavities as a result of this, which is why it’s bad for your teeth. While it doesn’t directly damage your teeth, it does help to fuel the mechanism that does.
