Amidst massive footfall to weekend getaways like Triund, Kherrganga and Parashar lake lies a small fresh water glacial lake in Kareri, located to the south of the Dhauladhar range. The base camp is McLeodganj.
Those who want to go on a solo trip on a limited budget, this place has a lot to offer. The weekend long trip can easily be covered under Rs 5,000. The 26 km journey (one way) is a mix of landscapes. You cross lush green forests with small streams, rugged stones and snow that is 4ft thick. The change in the scenery is refreshing and soothing. The trek is a marked trail, making it easier for travellers to reach the place. For those of you who love snow, the best time to visit is from end of February to March. The lake is frozen at this time. And for those who love lush greenery, the best time to visit is from May till September.
You can board a bus from Majnu ka Tilla or ISBT Kashmere gate to McLeodganj. There are both private and government buses costing anywhere between Rs 600 and Rs 1,300 for one way, depending on the kind of bus you choose. The 13-hour ride journey from a landlocked location to the Himalayas is a pleasant one. Once you reach the McLeodganj bus stand, you can walk up to the mall road and look for accommodation.
Popular base camps are located in Dharamkot, a km away from the bus stand. One such base camp is Shiv Shakti – a common point for various adventure groups. You can keep your luggage, get fresh and begin the trek. Trekkers prefer walking to Dharamkot as it makes for a warm-up. The trek to Kareri Lake begin from Kareri village which is 13km from McLeodganj. While backpackers usually trek to the village, you can also book a cab if you are short of time. The ride would cost you around Rs 1,500- 2,000. The trek takes you through jungles and requires climbing on rocks. Usually, travellers halt in Ghera and walk towards the village.
